I can't put my finger on exactly what but I didn't get along with this one which is a shame. Playing for a while gives quite the headache thanks to that.įor how tight and small the areas are the speed, controls and physics just seem all out of balance. Glass Bottom Games is a small independent developer which was founded in October of 2011. SkateBIRD began as a Kickstarter project which was launched on June 10th, 2019, and saw immediate funding success. SkateBIRD reached its Kickstarter funding goal within twenty-four hours of the games announcement, and on the 10th of December, 2019, a trailer for SkateBIRD was played during the Nintendo Indie World Showcase. Glass Bottom Games has announced that their upcoming video game SkateBIRD is coming to Nintendo Switch in 2020. ![]() I particularly strongly dislike the depth of field effect which feels too strong for how small the areas are - which is not currently possible to turn off which seems like a big release oversight to me. SkateBIRD is a skating game where the player controls a small, puffy bird skating around a miniature skate park made out of everyday objects like magazines and plastic straws. (Okay, I got my bird puns out of the way I’ll leave the rest to others.) So when I received an opportunity to review the game ahead of release, I eagerly took the chance to do so. The camera and the controls are more of a nuisance than anything. I have been eagerly following the development of SkateBIRD on Twitter for nearly three years, and it flapped its way towards the top of my Steam wishlist and perched itself there ever since. The premise is that you’re the lonely pet bird of a former skateboarding owner, who is no longer around as much to look after you, and. You skate in open, free-play levels, with collectables to find and missions to complete in order to progress to the next part of the story. It's not especially bad it's just not exactly great either. SkateBIRD’s gameplay setup follows a structure that anyone who has played a 3D skating game should be familiar with. The little birds are wonderful and it looks pretty good overall but the most important part, the actual skating, it doesn't do particularly well. “ We are thrilled the console and PC communities finally get the chance to drop in and get skating!”Īs a game, it's ridiculously cute. “As a small indie studio, the journey to launching on multiple platforms isn’t always the easiest one, but our community and fans have been instrumental in supporting us every step of the way,” said Megan Fox, founder, Glass Bottom Games. SkateBIRD was crowdfunded on Kickstarter back in 2019 where it managed to raise $67,220. By refusing to sell games on the EGS if are not excusive, is to kick the customer out EGS and sendng them right back to Steam after they have spent, by now what must be hundreds of millions of dollars to get customers in. ![]() Glass Bottom previously developed titles including Hot Tin Roof, Spartan Fist, and Jones on Fire. The whole point of the excusives is it get you into the store and if it works out the EGS takes Steams place as the first place you think of going when a new game come out. A better camera will be a vast improvement to the game, but it must be said that while there is room for improvement, SkateBIRD is hardly unplayable. ![]() The devs have committed to reworking the camera from the ground up however, this may take a while. Everything would be going well, and I would be on that very last item but either the camera or a bad collision would betray me, resulting in my poor little bird tumbling off a ledge. Feathery Frustrationsīetween the occasionally finicky camera and the floaty controls, it was sometimes frustrating trying to do some of the missions that involved collecting a bunch of items. Other than that, it’s serviceable enough and doesn’t get in the way too much, behaving for the most part as you would expect. Skating past and through obstacles can cause it to stutter uncontrollably, although thankfully this usually only lasts for a few seconds. Would be a shame if the camera were to freak out right now
